BUSINESS / CORPORATE ME
The ‘Creative Me’ is not siloed. No matter what I produce, there is always a reason behind it. Whether it be to target a specific market, to increase revenue, or simple to expand an audience base; My creations do not just tell amazing stories. Their underlying purposes are strategically business-driven.
The ‘Business Me’ also believes in education. A strong leader needs to train each person in their team to be the best version of themselves en route to achieving shared goals and visions.
I strive to be him.
I am a highly experienced, motivated and goal-oriented manager that leads by example. Equally adept in strategy, planning and on-ground application, I believe communication and education are key to ensuring success in any endeavour.
LEADING A TEAM OF CONTENT CREATORS IN A CORPORATE SETTING
At the end of my tenure in Astro, the sub-department I managed (Gempak Studios) had over 15 capable content creators. The team consisted of directors, producers, editors, and more.
The quantity of deliverables was high as the team was required to produce daily video content for multiple digital assets as well as produce branded content. With my stewardship, however, we hit all deadlines while ensuring quality of products.
I also focused on developing the team’s skills, both individually and as a unit – often challenging everyone to become a better version of themselves.
STRATEGIC CONTENT EXPANSION IN MALAYSIA & BEYOND
My role in Astro involved the strategic expansion of Gempak Studios, a newly formed sub-department in Astro. Working closely with other departments, the studio increased revenue year-on-year through sponsorships and branded content creation.
In addition to my responsibilities, I engaged in company-wide strategic development to further expand reach beyond the Malaysian borders. Alongside my own mentor, I was responsible for a portion of the tactical execution and operations of said strategies.
ENTREPRENEURSHIP & TACKLING THE UNKNOWN HEAD-ON!
STRAYING FROM CORPORATE
My fascination with entrepreneurship began when I was working for BFM Media. In addition to my responsibilities, I was pursuing a BSc in Business with the University of London (Lead College: London School of Economics).
Honestly, I was hired as a simple video producer. Not much was asked of me. However, I took initiatives to expand content offerings and push video content as a viable monetary business stream.
At the end of my first year in BFM, I successfully monetised video content and made over RM 95,000 in revenue – all with a shoe-string budget and limited resources. By my second year, revenue grew by 50%.
LEARNING WHILE WORKING
While working with limited resources as well as knowledge on running a whole company, I quickly became adept in multiple skills including logistics and operations, administration, accounting and digital lead generation.
Through the efforts of my partners and I, revenue grew by 50% year-on-year for 4 years straight (until the pandemic). Additionally, overheads were lowered by 30% by streamlining operating procedures. We also pivoted into related ventures to fully utilise resources and increase revenue.
I bring whatever I learn forward. My experiences make me a better business practitioner and a stronger manager. I would even say it has helped me become a smarter creative. And now, I look forward to my next endeavour.
